Lower Ocklawaha

The Lower Ocklawaha River is an approximately 13 mile stretch of the Ocklawaha below the Kirkpatrick Dam cut off from the upper reaches of the Ocklawaha River. Paddlers often navigate this stretch of the river in two sections: 1) Kirkpatrick Dam to SR19 (8 miles) and 2) SR19 Bridge at the Johnson Field Boat Ramp to the St. Johns River (5 miles). The SR19 bridge has parking and a boat ramp, but no other facilities.

On the Dam to SR19 route, you will be able to stop at Davenport Landing. The Landing is a former steamboat stop along this winding river. There are three primitive campsites available. One can access this site by foot by driving on SR19 south of Palatka to FR74, drive 2.5 miles east on FR74 to the trail start, Davenport Landing Trail (.7 mile loop). East to moderate. Take bug repellant.

The SR19 to the St. Johns trip is winding with many side streams. It is surrounded on either side by public lands. From the confluence of the St. Johns River, it is about a mile north to Welaka.
